M any people have left their homes in search of food and water, and pasture for animals. Large-scale displacement is often accompanied by a deterioration in hygiene and sanitation. Outbreaks of infectious diseases are a major concern, especially when combined with low existing vaccination coverage and health service availability.  As people become increasingly food insecure, they also must make the impossible choice between food and healthcare, even as nutritional deficiencies make them increasingly vulnerable to disease.   • Mobile vaccination teams visit a center for displaced people in Uzhgorod and conduct COVID-19 vaccination with elderly residents.  Uzhhorod is a city in Zakarpattya Oblast and is located on the river Uzh in western Ukraine, at the border with Slovakia and near the border with Hungary. Other borders are not far away, including Poland and Romania.   • On 25 March 2022, health workers gather for their monthly meeting at a primary health facility in Islamabad, Pakistan. Each facility has 20 to 25 health workers who provide sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services to their community, across the continuum of care.  WHO provided the workers with individual touchscreen tablets. These tools are part of an Electronic Data Management system, brought to Islamabad in 2020, which has focused on tracking patient history, as well as collecting data for a digitally integrated, centralized health center. The electronic system has connected the community to the health system, has made medical data easier to record, and has elevated the status of the health workers in the community.  “Lady Health Workers” are part a government health program supported by WHO to provide essential primary health services, including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), to underserved communities where they themselves often live. As of 2020, maternal mortality in Pakistan was 186/100 000 live births. About 25% of married women are using modern contraceptives, and the unmet need for family planning is 17%. There are 29 abortions per 1000 women of reproductive age. The adolescent birth rate is 46 per 1000.   • 17 March 2021. A patient with leishmaniasis is treated at the National Centre for Disease Control in Tawergha, Libya. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a major public health problem in Libya. The disease causes skin lesions, mainly ulcers, on exposed parts of the body. Without proper treatment, it can leave life-long scars and lead to serious disability or stigma. WHO is the sole provider of antileishmanial treatments in Libya.   • Solomon, 32, and his wife Agere, 28, each provide skin-to-skin care to their preterm twins at a KMC unit at Felege Hiwot Hospital in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia on 25 March 2021. Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is an effective way to prevent mortality in both preterm and low birth weight (LBW) infants. KMC is prolonged skin-to-skin contact for the baby with the mother or other caregiver for as long as possible during day and night, as well as exclusive breastfeeding or breast milk feeding. Fathers and other caregivers can also provide skin to skin care. Among infants born preterm or LBW, KMC has been shown to reduce infant deaths by as much as 40%, hypothermia by more than 70%, and severe infections by 65%. Mothers remain with their babies from birth to be able to breastfeed and practice skin-to-skin contact as part of KMC. KMC is one of the most cost-effective ways to increase survival of LBW and preterm newborns in low-income countries like Ethiopia. KMC was first introduced in Ethiopia in 1996 at the Black Lion Hospital. Since then, with support from WHO, KMC services have been expanded to other hospitals and health facilities including the Felege Hiwot Hospital, in Bahir Dar. Globally, with 15 million babies born preterm (before 37 weeks) and 21 million born LBW (under 2.5kg) each year, these infants face significant health risks, as preterm-related complications are the leading causes of death of newborns. Hence, WHO advises that KMC should continue amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The vast distances and grueling schedules mean many drivers live on the road, with only an occasional trip home to see their family. Astonishingly, research in 2017 showed poor eyesight could be putting almost half of India’s truck drivers – and other road users – at further risk. But their transient lifestyle, lack of free time and limited income mean that getting help for eye conditions, and receiving follow-up treatment, just isn’t possible. To help drivers get the eye treatment they need, Sightsavers India has created a system that takes eye care services directly to them. He would like to study agroforestry engineering in the future. In Colombia, vulnerable communities in the Amazon region are among the priority groups for COVID-19 vaccination. Colombian authorities are addressing the challenge of reaching out to remote indigenous communities, some of which are only accessible by air or by river. Health teams are going door-to-door and setting up “pop-up” vaccination sites in order to quickly vaccinate as many eligible community residents as possible. Health authorities are adapting their strategy in the area in order to take into account cultural specificities, and are working with indigenous health workers and field vaccinators to facilitate community engagement in the process. On 1 March 2021, Colombia became the first country in the Americas to receive COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility, marking an historic step toward the goal of ensuring equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in the region and worldwide. The delivery of 117 000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines adds to the vaccination campaign that the Colombian government started on February 17 with doses obtained from bilateral agreements with the producers. Health authorities are adapting their strategy in the area in order to take into account cultural specificities, and are working with indigenous health workers and field vaccinators to facilitate community engagement in the process. On 1 March 2021, Colombia became the first country in the Americas to receive COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility, marking an historic step toward the goal of ensuring equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in the region and worldwide. The delivery of 117 000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines adds to the vaccination campaign that the Colombian government started on February 17 with doses obtained from bilateral agreements with the producers. COVAX, the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and WHO, working in partnership with developed and developing country vaccine manufacturers, UNICEF, PAHO Revolving Fund, the World Bank, and others. It is the only global initiative that is working with governments and manufacturers to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are available worldwide to both higher-income and lower-income countries.
